Is God Calling You to be a Pastor?

The right kind of education is essential to the man who has answered God's call. No army dare send a soldier into battle without proper training. The results would be devastating, not only for the warrior, but for the war.

AN A.P.B. IS OUT, WOULD YOU RECOGNIZE THE ONE WHO TOOK YOUR PLACE?

A modern parable (PLEASE READ).

One day, a man went as a visitor to a well known larger church. He got there early, parked his car and got out. Another car pulled up near by and parked. The driver got out and said in a rather loud voice, " Hey! I always park there! You took my place!"

The visitor got out of his car, went inside for the service, found a row with a few empty seats and sat down. A young lady from the church approached him and stated, "That's my seat! You took my place!" The visitor was somewhat distressed by this rude welcome, but moved over, but still said nothing.

After the service, the visitor went back into the Sanctuary and sat down to pray. Another member came up to him and said, "That's where I always sit! Would you mind sitting over there, you see, you took my place!" The visitor was  troubled by this treatment, but still said nothing.

Later as the congregation was praying for Christ to dwell among them, the visitor now stood up, and his appearance began to change. His clothing became a simple robe. Horrible scars became visible on his hands and on his now sandaled feet. Someone from the congregation noticed Him and called out, "Hey you there, what’s going on, what’s happened to you?" The visitor replied, as His hat became a crown of thorns, and a tear fell from his eye, "you don’t even recognize me do you? You see, I’m the one who took your place!"

When you receive this, say a prayer. That's all you have to do. There is nothing attached, just pray that the ones around you this Sunday will truly recognize the one "who took their place." (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Bringing Up Girls

Now that the hubbub of the holidays has passed, we come to a quieter time,  a time to think. As I was surfing the web, I ran across this, written by Dr. James Dobson. I want to share this with you, as I believe this is very relevant for our day to day lives.

The rest is from Dr. Dobson. “I want to offer a few relevant comments about boys and girls, and men and women. These thoughts first appeared in my book, Bringing Up Girls, and included one of my favorite statements about child rearing. This chapter is called, “Teaching Girls to Be Ladies.” I hope you like it, especially as it relates indirectly to Valentine’s Day. To begin, I’ll step back a couple of hundred years and get a running start at describing the principles that matter most. The ideas I will share were written two centuries ago, and they are precisely on target today. They were the beliefs and recommendations of the second President of the United States, John Adams. He was a prolific reader, statesman, and author, and he made an incalculable contribution to our country. He was not a perfect man, but he lived by a standard of righteousness throughout his adult life. In his autobiography, Adams wrote a commentary on the subject of moral behavior, which he called “manners.” Though the language is formal and dated, I urge you to read these words carefully and thoughtfully. They carry great meaning for us today.”  “From all that I had read of history of government, of human life, and manners, I [have] drawn this conclusion, that the manners of women [are] the most infallible barometer by which to ascertain the degree of morality and virtue in a nation. All that I have since read and all the observations I have made in different nations, have confirmed me in this opinion. The Manners of Women are the surest criterion by which to determine whether a republican government is practicable, in a nation or not. The Jews, the Greeks, the Romans, the Swiss, the Dutch, all lost their public spirit, their republican principles and habits, and their republican forms of government, when they lost the modesty and domestic virtues of their women. . . . The foundations of national morality must be laid in private families. In vain are schools, academies and universities instituted if loose principles and licentious habits are impressed upon children in their earliest years. The mothers are the earliest and most important instructors of youth”. John Adams- President of the United States of America

How insightful it is that Adams placed the responsibility for the essential moral character of the nation squarely on the shoulders of mothers. Fathers play a key role too, of course, but moms are absolutely indispensable. It is their primary task to transmit enduring principles of right and wrong to the next generation. The old proverb, “the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world,” is still true. If women grow weary of that responsibility, or if they lose sight of their own moral compass, no other institution or governmental agency will be able to save the nation”.  He also wrote: “We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” So wrote John Adams, 2nd President of the United States (1797-1801)

ROMANS 1:1

WORD STUDY:  δοῦλος (doulos) – Slave

Word Definition: (doulos); can have no other proper definition other than SLAVE, a man of servile condition.  One who gives himself up to another’s will—those devoted to another to the disregard of one’s own interest.  A Slave (doulos), used by Christ in extending and advancing His cause among men.

Romans 1:1, “Paul a servant/SLAVE (doulos) of Jesus Christ, called to be an Apostle and set apart for the gospel of God—”

A doulos of Christ Jesus: I like the way the Apostle Paul identifies himself in his epistles. In Romans 1:1, Philippians 1:1 and Titus 1:1, he begins each letter by referring to himself as "a servant or really, a SLAVE (doulos) of Christ Jesus". The English word servant just doesn't do the Greek term justice. Bondservant is better but still truly incomplete. The word in Greek is doulos. A doulos was truly a SLAVE who was the property of the SLAVE (doulos) master. The SLAVE (doulos) master (called kurios) bought the SLAVE (doulos) and thus had complete rights over the SLAVE (doulos). He could order the SLAVE (doulos) to do anything; he could even order the death of the SLAVE (doulos) at no penalty to himself. The doulos was like chattel.

Paul explains that all people are slaves (doulos). They are either slaves (doulos) to sin,or slaves (doulos) to righteousness.

                     Where do you stand?

  1. This is a very good blog post today.. completely spoke to me. We had new people sit by us today in church and I was taken aback at first because of their appearance and I had to say a prayer to not be judgmental. When it came time for us to greet each other half way through worship, I turned to this stranger (visitor) sitting beside me and said hello and we embraced. It was a very special moment and I'm glad I didn't shy away from it. After the service, Kiley (my daughter) asked me who the woman was that I hugged and I just told her, she was just a fellow Christian and a nice lady and I just felt moved to hug her.
Completely blessed to read this today! Love you both!

  4. I liked the post about bringing up girls. I agree the mother is absolutely necessary. My daughter is growing into a young woman. I'm happy to see how much she represents a child of God. In church today, she had both devotionals and her Bible and she was reading all of them and referencing back to the Bible.
    Such a proud moment.

    Bill and Kathy,

Thanks for the note. Mpagi has a heart for God. Unfortunately there were a few who sought to discourage him yesterday but he tried not to pay attention to them.

Appreciate your weekly messages also. Enjoyed the "Modern Parable" this week... we have a lady in our church who would do such-YIKES!

  7. Very good topic on Bringing up Girls. He brings up some great points on how the interaction of young men and women should be and how they should behave. I think there are some variables that don't make it very simple but it would be nice if the kids were able to interact properly and it does start with the mother and backed up by the father. I think the most challenging time. I liked the "you took my place" story as well. Very good way to make a great point.
